After an urgent call from a close customer, we have embarked on a specialized rudder welding repair whilst vessel continued its cargo operations at the terminal. Upon arrival, we have commenced the diving safety procedures and initial inspection.
During the inspection, we have noted 2x 1000mm cracks on the rudder stock. After we have confirmed the repair plan with rudders OEM and class surveyor, we have started by removing the cracks by UW gouging. When cracks were removed, we filled the material until original plate thickness by a class approved underwater welding procedure. Once completed, we have confirmed no further relevant indications were present by underwater UV MPI examination. Upon this succesfully executed welding repair, we covered all bare metal with a two-component underwater coating, completing the job with flying colors!
